Recently I was commissioned by the newly opened Port Coquitlam CrossFit to paint a mural on their wall. Now, a mural painter is not something I would call myself and it was wayyyy out of my comfort zone BUT, because we are suppose to challenge the boundaries of our comfort zone from time to time I said "yes". Once I said "yes" my brain started creating ideas.
Many people find it difficult to walk into a gym, especially for the first time. If you are super fit it is perhaps much easier but for someone seeking fitness and trying to make a few lifestyle changes it can be daunting especially into a CrossFit gym. I wanted to create a piece of art that was inviting, fun and would make the gym environment a comfortable place to be.
We all know a gym is a place where many get stronger and healthier. We also know a gym can be a place of refuge, a place of healing and a place to shed that shitty day. I wanted to create art with movement and a message. Walking into a gym takes strength regardless of your physical strength. To be there and want a certain lifestyle takes lots of courage and strength. You are at the gym to get stronger physically but as you gain physical strength you will often find you gain mental strength. That strength allows for one more rep, it allows for you to say you've had enough and it allows for you to grow as a person on so many levels.
Breathing is something we all take for granted at times until we are either out of breath or hyperventilating and trying to control our breath. In life there are those times of anxiety, panic and that feeling of being weak and our breath is rapid. It takes strength to get to the other side of an anxiety attack and to feel your breath slow and become regular and know you can move forward with your day. When working out if we don't breathe that next rep is so much harder or that lift just doesn't happen. When we breathe effectively during a workout whether we run, do crossfit or yoga our breathing is so important.
Feel your strength and breathe is a reminder that you are strong just for living your life and it reminds us to breathe to keep us alive and to help us calm our minds.
To train at PortCoquitlam CrossFit is a joy. I have watched with delight as my son and daughter gain strength both physically and mentally. Coach Morgan is a kind and compassionate man who loves helping people get stronger and see their lives transform as a result of his guidance. Coach Caroline is so down to earth you are instantly comfortable in her presence. Together their knowledge of how the body and mind work together is a gift to those who train with them. This gym is a truly special place and I was so honoured to have been asked to put my art on their walls.
